Mid-Day Meal Workers’ Anger Boils Over, AITUC Threatens DEO Office Siege
In a scorching summer, the simmering discontent among mid-day meal workers has finally boiled over in Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh. The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has taken the bold step of staging a dharna in front of the District Education Officer’s (DEO) office, demanding immediate attention to their long-pending grievances.
A Fight for Dignity and Fair Compensation
At the forefront of this agitation is P. Sunkayya, the AITUC district general secretary. He has been a vocal advocate for the rights of mid-day meal workers, who toil tirelessly to ensure that children receive nutritious meals in schools. Sunkayya has been leading the charge against the Central Kitchen system, which he believes is a major obstacle to the welfare of these workers.
“The Central Kitchen system is a recipe for disaster,” Sunkayya declared. “It has led to the exploitation of mid-day meal workers, who are forced to work in subhuman conditions without adequate compensation. We demand that this system be scrapped forthwith.”
A Call for Fair Wages and Social Security
Sunkayya’s list of demands is long and varied. He has called for a minimum monthly wage of Rs. 15,000 for mid-day meal workers, a significant enhancement from the current meager wages. He has also demanded that mess charges be increased to reflect the rising cost of living, as well as gratuity and retirement benefits for the workers.
These demands are not merely a matter of financial compensation; they are a call for dignity and respect for the hardworking men and women who toil behind the scenes to ensure that children receive the nourishment they need to learn and grow.
A Threat of Siege
Sunkayya’s message to the government is clear: resolve our demands, or face the consequences. “If our demands are not met, we will not hesitate to lay siege to the DEO office,” he warned. “We will not rest until our rights are recognized and respected.”
The threat is not an empty one. The AITUC has a long history of militant trade unionism, and its members are known for their unwavering commitment to the cause of workers’ rights.
A Show of Solidarity
The dharna at the DEO office was a testament to the solidarity of the mid-day meal workers. CPI Nandyal town secretary Prasad, AIYF district secretary Nagaramudu, AITUC town president D Srinivasulu, and secretary Dhanunjay, along with several mid-day meal workers, joined forces to demand justice.
As they submitted a memorandum to Choudeswari, Assistant Director of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, the protesters sent a clear message to the government: we will not be ignored.
The fate of the mid-day meal workers hangs in the balance, as the government weighs its response to the AITUC’s demands. Will it heed the call for justice, or will it continue to turn a blind eye to the suffering of these hardworking men and women? Only time will tell.
