Mumbai Local Train Services Hit by Technical Fault at Thane
Mumbai, August 6: The morning rush hour turned chaotic for thousands of Central Railway commuters on Thursday as a technical fault in a suburban local train at Thane station brought services on the Up slow line to a grinding halt for nearly 40 to 45 minutes.
Technical Fault at Thane Disrupts Services
The T-36 local, which arrived on Platform No. 4 at Thane at 8.42 am, developed a technical defect and was subsequently cancelled. The train remained stationed at the platform until 9.03 am before being moved empty to Kurla Carshed for repairs. This 21-minute halt had a ripple effect, delaying several following suburban services on the Up slow corridor. As a result, local trains ran behind schedule by around 40 to 45 minutes, causing heavy crowding at stations including Thane, Mulund, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli, and Ghatkopar during peak office hours.
Passenger Falls Ill in AC Local
In a separate incident, a passenger travelling in a Down slow AC local towards Kalyan complained of uneasiness near Parel around 9.15 am. The train reached Dadar Platform No. 8 at 9.19 am, where GRP personnel, railway staff, and the assistant station manager immediately attended to the passenger. The train was held until 9.23 am while first aid and juice were provided. Railway officials advised the passenger to seek treatment at Sion Hospital, but he declined and chose to return home with his relatives after they reached Dadar around 9.45 am.
Safety Concerns and Emergency Response
The incident has once again highlighted the need for swift emergency response to protect passenger safety during peak-hour operations. This is particularly concerning given the recent air-conditioning failure in an AC local on July 14, which caused severe discomfort to passengers and forced two commuters to be hospitalised. The latest episode has drawn attention to crowding inside AC locals, underscoring the importance of addressing these issues to ensure a smoother and safer travel experience for commuters.
Impact on Commuters
The disruptions caused by the technical fault and the passenger falling ill have left many commuters frustrated and inconvenienced. “I was on my way to work and had to wait for over 45 minutes for my train,” said a commuter from Thane. “The delay caused a lot of inconvenience, and I had to rush to reach office on time.” The disruptions have also highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and emergency response systems to mitigate the impact of technical faults and medical emergencies.
A Call for Action
As the city’s population continues to grow, the pressure on the local train network is increasing. It is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to address the safety concerns and emergency response issues. This includes investing in modern infrastructure, upgrading emergency response systems, and ensuring that passengers receive timely medical assistance in case of emergencies. By doing so, the authorities can ensure a safer and more efficient travel experience for commuters, reducing the risk of disruptions and inconvenience.
