Ganesh Festival 2026: MSRTC Prepares to Meet Travel Rush with 5,220 Extra Buses
As the Ganesh festival approaches, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is gearing up to meet the massive travel rush between Mumbai and the Konkan region. In a bid to ensure smooth and safe travel for devotees, MSRTC has announced the operation of 5,220 additional buses between September 7 and 25.
A Staff Shortage and Ticket Fraud Concerns
Despite the additional services, MSRTC is facing a major challenge in the form of a staff shortage. Employee unions have repeatedly flagged the lack of operational staff, including drivers, conductors, and technical personnel, particularly during festival seasons. Additionally, the corporation is also grappling with increasing instances of fake tickets and misuse of online booking platforms.
Online Booking and Concessions
To cater to the increased passenger demand, online reservations for the additional services have been opened through the official MSRTC website and the MSRTC Bus Reservation mobile application. Group bookings for a minimum of 40 passengers will begin on August 10, with eligible women and senior citizens continuing to receive fare concessions under existing government schemes.
MSRTC’s Commitment to Smooth Travel
Addressing a review meeting at the MSRTC headquarters, Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik emphasized the corporation’s commitment to serving passengers during the festival without considering profit or loss. “Ganeshotsav shares an emotional bond with Konkan residents, and ST buses have always been an integral part of that journey. We are fully prepared to ensure smooth travel for devotees,” he said.
Supervision and Breakdown Response Teams
To prevent any disruptions, senior officers will supervise operations round the clock at major bus stations, while breakdown response teams will be deployed along key Konkan highways. This will ensure uninterrupted services and minimize the impact of any technical issues.
Lessons from Ashadhi Ekadashi Operations
MSRTC’s recent experience during the Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage, where nearly 5,200 additional buses were operated, has provided valuable insights into managing a large-scale travel rush. The corporation hopes to build on this experience and provide a seamless travel experience for devotees during the Ganesh festival.
