In a shocking turn of events, a Karnataka man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his younger brother and burying his body under an under-construction home in Tumakuru district. The saga began in Sira, where 40-year-old mason Ravichandra Naik was brutally strangled to death on April 2, 2022, by his brother Raja and sister-in-law Savitri Bai. The duo was having an affair, and when Ravichandra discovered their relationship, they hatched a plan to silence him. The motive behind the murder was not just a secret relationship but also a desire to cover up their illicit affair.
A COVER-UP THAT DIDN’T LAST
To conceal their crime, Savitri concocted a story, telling the family that her husband had traveled to Bengaluru to work as a mason. For nearly two months, this lie held, but the family’s suspicions eventually grew. When relatives gathered to formally register family land holdings, Savitri was asked to contact Ravichandra to complete the paperwork. Under intense questioning, she broke down and confessed to the crime.
POLICE EXHUME THE BODY, DNA MATCH CONFIRMS
On June 2, 2022, police exhumed the body from the shallow grave under the under-construction home. Due to the severe decomposition, investigators conducted a DNA test comparing the victim’s remains with his son. The DNA match proved that the victim was indeed Ravichandra Naik.
A LIFE TERM BASED ON FORENSIC EVIDENCE AND EXTRAJUDICIAL CONFESSIONS
Public prosecutor VA Kavita highlighted the key elements that secured the conviction: forensic match; extrajudicial statements provided by Raja Naik and Savitri, outlining how they committed the murder; and Ravichandra’s family members’ testimonies during trial proceedings. The court held Raja Naik guilty of murdering his younger brother and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
THE FATE OF THE OTHER ACCUSED
The other accused, Savitri Bai, died of a lung infection last month, police said. Her death has brought a sense of closure to the family, but the memory of the brutal murder will forever be etched in their minds.
