Raipur, Chhattisgarh: The Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court at Jagdalpur, the headquarters of Bastar, is on the cusp of a historic verdict. After a grueling 12-year trial, the final argument in the high-profile case of the 2013 Jeeram Ghati Naxal attack is scheduled to be held on August 10.
A Decade of Legal Battle
The trial, which began after the NIA filed its initial chargesheet against nine arrested accused on September 25, 2014, has seen 101 witnesses testify and crucial documents presented as evidence. The NIA’s supplementary charge sheet, filed on September 28, 2015, added 30 more accused to the list.
A Brutal Attack on the Congress Convoy
The FIR, re-registered by the NIA on May 27, 2013, paints a grim picture of the events that unfolded on May 25, 2013. At around 4:15 pm, members of the banned CPI (Maoist) ambushed the convoy of the Parivartan Yatra, a Congress-led campaign, on National Highway 221 in the hilly areas of Jeeram Ghati. The attack claimed the lives of 27 people, including 10 police personnel, and left 38 others injured.
A Loss of Prominent Leaders
The Naxal attack was a devastating blow to the Congress party in Chhattisgarh. Among the prominent leaders who lost their lives in the ambush were Nand Kumar Patel, the then-Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, and his newly married son; former Union minister Vidya Charan Shukla; and former minister Mahendra Karma, the founder of the anti-Naxal civil vigilante force Salwa Judum.
