Gurugram Floods Again: 97mm Rainfall Brings City to a Standstill
Gurugram, a city known for its rapid growth and urbanization, has once again been brought to its knees by heavy rainfall. On Friday, nearly 97 mm of rainfall left large parts of the city waterlogged for the second consecutive day, with residents forced to navigate flooded roads and the district administration’s work-from-home advisory remaining in force.
Old Gurugram Worst Hit
The old Gurugram area bore the brunt of the flooding, with Sheetla Mata Road emerging as the city’s worst-affected stretch. The road, which has been a hotbed of flooding in previous monsoons, saw several lanes remain submerged, forcing shops to shut early. This is not the first time that old Gurugram has been affected by flooding, and residents are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of a permanent solution.
28 Waterlogging Hotspots Identified
According to officials, 28 major waterlogging hotspots have been identified in Gurugram this monsoon, including Dundahera, Surat Nagar, Bajghera, Dhanwapur Road, Old Bus Stand area, and Old Delhi Road. These areas have been plagued by flooding due to encroachments on stormwater drains and unplanned urban growth.
Encroachments and Urban Growth: The Root of the Problem
Officials have attributed the recurring problem of flooding in Gurugram largely to encroachments on stormwater drains and unplanned urban growth. Areas such as Sector 9, Kadipur, and parts of the NH-8 corridor continue to face flooding due to blocked drains, while the drainage network in Sectors 14 and 17 is under severe pressure from dense stilt-plus-four developments.
GMDA’s Efforts to Clear Encroachments
GMDA Chief Executive Officer PC Meena has said that major drainage channels have been cleared of encroachments this year, and action on smaller encroachments will follow. However, residents remain skeptical about the effectiveness of these efforts, given the chronic nature of the flooding problem.
A Permanent Solution in Sight?
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is planning to introduce precast drains in old Gurugram, a move that could potentially provide a permanent solution to the city’s flooding woes. The pre-fabricated drainage system allows drains to be installed quickly without digging up entire roads, making it suitable for the area’s narrow and congested lanes.
Precast Drains: A Game-Changer?
According to MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, the pre-fabricated drainage system will be a game-changer for the city. Unlike conventional drains, precast units are manufactured off-site and assembled on location, reducing construction time and traffic disruption. The civic body is likely to begin the project on the Sheetla Mata Road corridor, which has emerged as Gurugram’s most flood-prone location this monsoon.
A Long-Term Solution Needed
While the introduction of precast drains is a step in the right direction, residents are calling for a long-term solution to the city’s flooding problem. With the city’s rapid growth showing no signs of slowing down, it is imperative that the authorities take concrete steps to address the root causes of the flooding. Only then can Gurugram hope to become a city that is resilient to the challenges of the monsoon season.
