West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress Embroiled in Land-Grabbing Scandal
In a major development, a Nadia district court in West Bengal has ordered a police probe into allegations of illegal land grabbing against Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and 29 others. The case, which spans across Nadia and Murshidabad districts, has sent shockwaves through the state’s political landscape.
The Allegations
At the center of the controversy is a complaint filed by Bapan Ghosh, a resident of Kaliganj in Nadia district. Ghosh alleged that since 2016, large plots of government land had been illegally grabbed and sold in Kaliganj block and Shaktipur village under Bendanga-2 block in Murshidabad district. He claimed that the land grabbing had resulted in the destruction of greenery, with several trees being cut down, causing damage to the environment and government property.
A History of Complaints
Ghosh’s complaint is not the first of its kind. He had previously reported the matter to the police and the forest department, but to no avail. In fact, he claimed that he was threatened by Trinamool Congress activists for speaking out against the alleged land grabbing. It was only after the change in regime in West Bengal following the recent Assembly polls that Ghosh filed a petition at the Krishnanagar District Sessions Court in Nadia district.
The Court’s Verdict
On Thursday, the court ordered a police probe into the allegations, paving the way for a thorough investigation into the matter. The probe will cover the activities of Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress general secretary and nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and 29 others, including Alifa Ahmed, a former Trinamool Congress legislator from Beldanga Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district.
Reactions from the Accused
Alifa Ahmed, one of the accused, has denied all charges against her. In a statement to the media, she claimed that the allegations were being made against her out of political vendetta. However, Abhishek Banerjee and Hasanuzzaman Sheikh, another accused, have remained silent on the matter.
