SC slams FSSAI over delay in introducing warning labels on packaged foods

Supreme Court Slams FSSAI Over Delay in Implementing Warning Labels on Packaged Foods

New Delhi, August 13

The Supreme Court has expressed its disappointment and frustration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) over the delay in introducing warning labels on packaged foods. The top court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a public charitable trust, 3S, and Our Health Society, seeking directions to the Centre, states, and Union territories to implement mandatory front-of-package warning labels (FOPL) on packaged foods.

Creating Awareness: A Necessity for a Healthy India

The bench comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran emphasized the importance of creating awareness, especially among growing children, about the dangers of junk food. The judges observed that the FOPL labels are necessary to inform consumers about the presence of high levels of sugar, salt, and saturated fats in packaged foods, which are key contributors to serious health issues such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers.

A Question of Intent: Does the Government Want Its People to be Healthy?

Justice Pardiwala questioned Additional Solicitor General Brijender Chahar, “Are you taking the court for a toss?” The question highlights the frustration and disappointment of the judges with the FSSAI’s delay in implementing the warning labels. The court noted that there was no progress on its earlier order regarding the issue of labelling, which has left many wondering if the government is genuinely interested in promoting public health.

The Alarming Surge in Lifestyle Diseases

The PIL highlighted the alarming surge in lifestyle diseases across the country, which are now responsible for over 6 million deaths annually. Diabetes has emerged as a silent epidemic affecting nearly one in four Indians, and the situation is only getting worse. The court was informed that non-communicable diseases are a major public health concern, and it is the responsibility of the government to take proactive measures to prevent and control these diseases.

A Call to Action: Will the Government Listen?

The Supreme Court has asked the FSSAI to take immediate action to implement the warning labels on packaged foods. The court has also warned that if the government does not take necessary steps to promote public health, it will have to consider passing an order to ensure compliance. The judges have made it clear that they are not taking the issue lightly and are committed to ensuring that the government takes its responsibility seriously.

A Public Interest Litigation: A Call to Action for a Healthier India

The PIL filed by 3S and Our Health Society has brought attention to the critical issue of promoting public health in India. The court’s intervention has highlighted the need for the government to take proactive measures to prevent and control lifestyle diseases. As the country grapples with the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, it is imperative that the government takes immediate action to implement the warning labels on packaged foods. The Supreme Court’s decision is a call to action for a healthier India, and it is hoped that the government will listen and take necessary steps to promote public health.
