In a landmark Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid out a comprehensive roadmap for India’s transformation into a developed nation by 2047. The ambitious vision, which includes specific targets across various sectors, aims to propel India to new heights of economic growth, technological prowess, and global influence.
India Aims for 50 Fortune Global 500 Companies
One of the most striking targets announced by Modi is the goal of having 50 Indian companies feature in the Fortune 500 list. Currently, only nine Indian companies are represented on the list, with Reliance Industries being the highest-ranked at No. 88. The target requires India’s representation to increase more than fivefold, indicating a significant boost in corporate growth and competitiveness.
Banks: India’s Next Global Giant
Modi also set an ambitious target for India’s banking sector, aiming to have an Indian bank enter the ranks of the world’s five largest banks. Currently, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China holds the top position, with $7.65 trillion in assets. State Bank of India, India’s largest lender, has assets of $877.07 billion and ranks 19th among Asia-Pacific banks. The target represents a substantial increase in the scale of an Indian banking institution.
Nuclear Power, AI, and Semiconductors: The Technology Push
Modi’s vision also includes a major expansion in India’s nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. Currently, the installed nuclear power capacity stands at 8.78 GW, and the government expects it to rise to 22.38 GW by 2031-32. The policy framework for the sector has been changing, with the SHANTI Act, 2025 providing for private-sector participation in establishing nuclear facilities under licence.
In addition, Modi announced a target to train one crore young people in AI skills over the next year. The IndiaAI Mission, which includes the YUVA AI for All programme, has already reached 85.27 lakh enrolments, indicating that the existing programme is approaching its stated one-crore target.
The semiconductor programme has also made significant progress, with 12 approved projects across six states, involving investment commitments of more than Rs 1.64 lakh crore. The approved projects cover semiconductor fabrication, display fabrication, and advanced packaging.
A Developed India by 2047
Modi’s vision for a developed India by 2047 is built around measurable increases in industrial scale, financial-sector size, energy capacity, and technological capabilities. The targets indicate a significant push for innovation and technological self-reliance, with a focus on making India an innovation hub, developing globally competitive brands, expanding green hydrogen and renewable energy, and building capabilities in areas such as counter-drone and hypersonic technologies.
The ambitious targets announced by Modi mark a significant shift in India’s economic and technological trajectory. With a focus on corporate growth, banking, nuclear power, AI, and semiconductor manufacturing, India is poised to become a major player in the global economy.
