Terror Strikes Kulgam: Migrant Worker Killed in Brick Kiln Attack
Kashmir Under Siege: Targeted Killings Continue
Srinagar, July 31 – In a chilling display of terror, unidentified militants launched a hit-and-run attack on a brick kiln in Kellam, Kulgam district, leaving one migrant worker dead and another critically injured. The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, has sent shockwaves across the valley, raising concerns about the safety of non-local labourers who continue to flock to Kashmir despite the risks.
A Desperate Cry for Help
According to official sources, the terrorists targeted two non-local labourers who were present at the brick kiln site. The victims, Deepak Ratray, 24, and Bhupendra, 28, both from Chhattisgarh, were immediately evacuated to a nearby medical facility. Unfortunately, Deepak succumbed to his injuries despite medical intervention, while Bhupendra remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery at Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag.
A Pattern of Terror
The Kellam attack is a grim reminder of the targeted killings that have plagued Kashmir in recent years. Since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, non-local migrant workers have been soft targets for terrorists, who have resorted to violence against them in various parts of the valley. These attacks have often occurred in south Kashmir, with occasional incidents reported in central Kashmir or Srinagar areas.
Security Forces on High Alert
Security forces quickly responded to the incident, cordoning off the surroundings and launching a search operation to track down those responsible. IGP Kashmir V K Birdi confirmed that one person died and another is being treated for his injuries. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the brutal terror attack, directing the security forces to step up their operations and eliminate the terrorists.
A Seasonal Exodus
Despite the risks, thousands of migrant workers continue to come to Kashmir seasonally, especially between March and November. These workers are often lured by the promise of employment and better living conditions, but they are also vulnerable to terror attacks. The recent killings have caused temporary flight or heightened security measures, but the situation remains precarious.

Overall terror-related fatalities in J&K have declined significantly post-2019 compared to earlier peaks, but targeted killings, including non-locals, minorities, and soft targets, remain a persistent tactic of terrorists. The Kellam attack is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat and the need for sustained security measures to protect the lives of non-local workers.
