Odisha Cabinet Approves MMJJM 2.0 to Empower 8 Lakh Tribal, PVTG Households
In a significant move to uplift the socio-economic conditions of Odisha’s most vulnerable communities, the state cabinet has given its approval to the implementation of the Mukhyamantri Janajati Jeevika Mission (MMJJM) 2.0. This ambitious five-year programme, set to roll out from 2026-27 to 2030-31, aims to improve the livelihoods of around 8 lakh tribal and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) households across 19 districts in the state.
A Comprehensive Approach to Livelihood Development
With a whopping outlay of Rs 2,995 crore, fully funded by the state government, MMJJM 2.0 seeks to build on the success of its predecessor, which currently covers 1.5 lakh tribal households in 13 districts. The programme will promote a range of farm, off-farm, and non-farm livelihood opportunities, including agriculture, horticulture, livestock rearing, fisheries, sericulture, forestry-based livelihoods, and traditional arts and crafts. This will not only enhance the income of tribal families but also encourage scientific farming practices and sustainable development.
Empowering Tribal Families through Choice and Transparency
A unique feature of MMJJM 2.0 is its beneficiary-centric approach, which allows tribal families to choose livelihood activities based on their interests and local opportunities. Each eligible household will receive Rs 30,000 in two instalments through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring transparent and timely financial assistance. This approach not only empowers tribal families but also promotes a sense of ownership and participation in the development process.
Strengthening the Livelihood Ecosystem
The programme also focuses on strengthening the livelihood ecosystem by creating irrigation facilities, post-harvest infrastructure, storage, processing, and marketing systems. This will not only increase household incomes but also promote value addition and entrepreneurship, thereby creating a more sustainable and inclusive development pathway for Odisha’s tribal regions.
Special Interventions for PVTG Communities
MMJJM 2.0 includes dedicated interventions for PVTG communities, including nutritional support for children, pregnant, and lactating mothers, crèche facilities in PVTG habitations, and a Special Flexi Fund of Rs 500 crore to address infrastructure gaps through a bottom-up planning approach. These interventions aim to address the unique challenges faced by PVTG communities and promote their overall well-being.

According to the government, the initiative is expected to increase household incomes, encourage scientific farming practices, strengthen community institutions, and promote sustainable and inclusive development in Odisha’s tribal regions. With MMJJM 2.0, the state government is taking a significant step towards empowering its most vulnerable communities and creating a brighter future for them.
