Vande Bharat’s first live heart transport helps save patient in Ahmedabad

Historic Medical Milestone: Vande Bharat Express Saves Life in Ahmedabad

In a groundbreaking medical feat, the Vande Bharat Express, India’s indigenous semi-high-speed train, played a pivotal role in saving the life of a critically ill cardiac patient in Ahmedabad on Friday. The train transported a live donor heart 250 km from Surat to Ahmedabad, creating a “green corridor” aboard the train and across city streets to facilitate the life-saving operation.

A Symphony of Coordination

The time-sensitive operation involved a seamless collaboration between the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Gujarat Police, and medical teams. The RPF and Gujarat Police worked tirelessly to establish a high-speed corridor from Surat to the operation theatre at the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Gujarat police ensured that the heart was transported swiftly and safely, while the medical teams prepared for the transplant.

A New Lease of Life

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel hailed the heart transplant as a unique example of service, congratulating all those involved in the effort. “Every second counts in organ transplantation! It was only because the live heart was transported from Surat to Ahmedabad in a matter of hours at the high speed of the Vande Bharat Express that this life-saving effort became possible,” Patel tweeted.

A Moment of Pride for Indian Railways

Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ved Prakash called the operation a moment of pride and satisfaction for Indian Railways. “Indian Railways Makes History! For the first time, the 20901 Mumbai Central-Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express successfully transported a live heart from Surat to Ahmedabad,” the DRM said on his official X handle.

A Tribute to Vande Bharat Express

The Vande Bharat Express, which departed from Surat at 8:58 am and reached Ahmedabad at 11:30 am, played a crucial role in the success of the mission. The train’s fast speed, punctuality, and reliability contributed significantly to the delivery of the heart within the stipulated time frame. This achievement showcases Indian Railways’ commitment to providing emergency and life-saving health services in times of need.

A Commitment to World-Class Healthcare

Chief Minister Patel congratulated the hospital’s doctors and medical staff for 77 successful heart transplant operations at the facility so far. He reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting the lives of every citizen in the state and providing swift, world-class healthcare services. This historic medical milestone is a testament to the strength of India’s healthcare system and the dedication of its medical professionals.

A New Era of Medical Transportation

The successful transportation of a live heart from Surat to Ahmedabad via the Vande Bharat Express marks a new era in medical transportation in India. It demonstrates the potential of Indian Railways to play a vital role in emergency and life-saving health services. This achievement will undoubtedly inspire further innovation and collaboration between the healthcare and transportation sectors in India.
