“Madras on Stage”: A Journey Through Time in Chennai<\/strong><\/p>\n

The “Made of Chennai Archival Photo Exhibit” titled “Madras on Stage” is a treasure trove of photographs that take us on a journey through the city’s vibrant public culture.<\/p>\n

From the iconic performances of renowned pianist Louis Kentner and violinist Yehudi Menuhin in 1954 to the energetic live show by Boney M in 1997, “Madras on Stage” has it all. Thirupurasundari Sevvel, a historian and the curator of the exhibit, notes that the city has been a magnet for artists from all over the world. “We have had artists from abroad come to Chennai to perform, and the city has always welcomed them with open arms,” she says.<\/p>\n

The exhibit is a visual feast, with stunning photographs that take us back in time. We see the US Navy Band from USS Eversole performing a rock concert in Madras in 1985, and Russian actor G.M. Pechnikov in a stage production of the Ramayana in 1982. These photographs not only showcase the city’s love for music and dance but also highlight the changing dynamics of the stage over the decades. “Earlier, artists would make do with whatever was available to quickly organise a concert or a performance. Now, we see more organised stage set-ups,” Sevvel observes.<\/p>\n

Tamil Film Artists Take Centre Stage<\/strong><\/p>\n

The exhibit also features photographs of Tamil film artists standing up for social causes. These images are a powerful reminder of the impact that cinema can have on society. By highlighting the struggles and triumphs of the common man, Tamil cinema has always been a voice for the voiceless.<\/p>\n

A Message for the Young<\/strong><\/p>\n

Minister for School Education, Tamil Development, and Information and Publicity Rajmohan recently visited the exhibit and interacted with school students who came to see the photographs. “Photography is deeply connected with history,” he said, encouraging the students to take up street photography and explore the world around them. With the rise of social media, photography has become an essential tool for storytelling, and it is heartening to see young minds taking an interest in this art form.<\/p>\n

The photographs on display have been digitally restored, retouched, and quality-enhanced by the PrePress team led by K.G. Gurumurthy.
