Over 650,000 refugees and asylum seekers in the country are at risk of losing access to food aid within weeks due to a severe funding shortfall. This alarming situation has been flagged by the United Nations, which warns that without urgent new funding, some refugees may be forced to return to war-torn Sudan in search of help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Nation on the Brink<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Sudan&#8217;s hunger crisis is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of conflict on civilians. More than 7.8 million people, over half the country&#8217;s population, are experiencing acute food insecurity, while a staggering 2.2 million children are acutely malnourished. The situation is so dire that the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have sounded the alarm, urging donors to step in and prevent a humanitarian disaster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refugees in a Desperate Situation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The WFP and UNHCR are working tirelessly to provide life-saving assistance to refugees in South Sudan. However, due to funding constraints, the WFP has been forced to scale back its assistance, leaving only 240,000 of the most vulnerable refugees receiving food support. These families are currently receiving food at half-rations, and without new funding, their last food distributions would be made in September.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Bleak Future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If funding does not materialize, no refugees in South Sudan will be receiving food assistance from October, according to UNHCR Deputy Representative Mesfin Degefu. This would have catastrophic consequences for families, who are already reducing meals, selling belongings, withdrawing children from school, and taking on debt to survive. Women and children would face heightened risks of exploitation and abuse, and some refugees have already asked UNHCR to help facilitate returns to Sudan, despite the agency not considering conditions safe for return.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Funding Gap of $37 Million<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The WFP is facing a daunting $37 million funding gap for refugee operations between October and December. If this gap is not bridged, further cuts are expected, including the cessation of food assistance for about 180,000 internally displaced people from October. By November, some 600,000 people living in famine-risk areas could lose life-saving support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Threat to Self-Reliance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The funding squeeze also threatens efforts to help refugees become self-reliant through farming, vocational training, and other livelihood programmes.
