The event, themed around the iconic song “Vande Mataram,” was a spectacle to behold, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivering his address amidst a sea of enthusiastic crowds.

For many first-time visitors, the experience was nothing short of magical. Karuna and Sandeep, a couple from Karnataka, had traveled with their two young children, Sayesh (7) and Avesh (5), to attend the celebrations. Karuna, visibly emotional, exclaimed, “This is my first time attending the Independence Day celebrations. I already have goosebumps!” as the Prime Minister began his address. The couple’s enthusiasm was palpable, and they were not alone in their excitement.

A Personal Connection to the Celebrations

For Lalita Pal, the Independence Day celebrations held a special significance. Her husband had recently been transferred to Delhi, and she had been eager to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister in person. As she watched the proceedings, she was moved by Mr. Modi’s words on children and their future. “We have traveled a long way, and what he spoke about children and their future was encouraging,” she said, her eyes shining with pride. Despite the humid morning proving challenging for her young son, Lalita felt that the experience was well worth it. “Seeing the Tricolour flying made the whole place feel very patriotic,” she said, her voice filled with emotion.

The Unprepared and the Undeterred

However, not everyone was aware of the entry requirements for the celebrations. Many visitors, unaware that passes were needed from the Ministry of Defence’s Aamantran portal, found themselves stuck in long queues outside the Red Fort Metro station. Anita Devi, a young mother from northwest Delhi’s Bawana, was one such visitor. She had traveled by an early morning bus with her husband and son, dressed in a green saree, only to find out that she needed a pass to enter the premises. Undeterred, she decided to view the decorated fort from outside. “Even if I am standing outside, hearing the national anthem makes me feel proud,” she said, her spirit unbroken.

A Celebration to Remember

The Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort were a truly unforgettable experience. For the first time, an Army band formally rendered “Vande Mataram,” with attendees joining in before the national anthem. The song was woven into the visuals, with children in white and saffron forming the words “Vande Mataram” in their seats, while flower petals spelled it out on the dais. The ceremony was a masterclass in patriotism, with Mi-17 helicopters flying over, releasing flower petals to cheering crowds while carrying flags with national colours and “Vande Mataram.” Tricolour balloons were released post-speech, adding to the festive atmosphere.

A Focus on the Future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address was a testament to the government’s focus on “Yuva Shakti” and a developed India by 2047. He met schoolchildren, NCC cadets, and My Bharat programme volunteers, underscoring the importance of empowering the youth to build a brighter future for the country. As the celebrations came to a close, the visitors left the Red Fort with memories that would last a lifetime, a sense of pride and patriotism that would stay with them forever.

Thousands of people walked to the Red Fort early on Saturday morning to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day, featuring a
