Artificial intelligence has transformed the way we learn, but has it also changed the way we think about knowledge and transformation? In this article, we explore the timeless lessons of the Upanisads, ancient Indian narratives that offer insights into the relationship between knowledge, knowing, and transformation in the age of AI.

The AI Problem: Instant Knowledge vs. Embodied Knowing

The recent celebration of Guru Purnima, coinciding with the beginning of the academic year, is a timely reminder of the importance of the guru-disciple relationship in Indian thought. However, the rise of AI has led to a new landscape in which information can be produced within seconds. This has raised questions about the role of teachers and gurus in this new era. Can AI replace a guru? Can it replace a teacher? These questions are not new, but they are more pressing than ever.

The Upanisads: A Foundation for Understanding

In a foundational course on ancient Indian thought, students encounter two questions that lie at the heart of several Indian philosophical traditions: Who am I? And how can knowledge become embodied, transforming the seeker at the deepest level? The Upanisads, which form the concluding sections of the Vedas, contain many narratives of learning that reveal how knowledge can become a lived form of knowing.

The Story of Indra and Prajapati

One of these narratives is the story of Indra, king of the gods, and Prajapati, the primordial creator and lord of creatures. Indra comes to Prajapati to learn about the nature of the true self, and Prajapati gives him an answer. However, Indra is not satisfied with the answer and returns to his teacher, only to receive another answer, and another, until he finally receives the secret and highest knowledge of the self after 101 years of living alongside Prajapati.

The Importance of Tapas: Inner Heat and Transformation

The story of Indra and Prajapati highlights the importance of tapas, the inner heat generated through austere spiritual practices. Tapas is not just asceticism, but a force of transformation that helps knowledge become embodied and begins to transform the practitioner. This idea can be applied beyond the world of asceticism. Anyone who has written a book, carried out academic research, or struggled to understand a difficult text knows this heat. It appears as frustration, effort, concentration, repetition, rewriting, and questions that do not yield an immediate answer.

The Responsibility of Students and Universities

The question is not whether AI can replace a guru, but what kind of students AI is creating. Human beings are naturally drawn to shortcuts, and AI has arrived as our perfect accomplice. We are all a little lazy, and AI has made it easier to avoid the slow and painful work of reading an academic article from beginning to end. However, this also means that universities must create learning processes that demand more. They must cultivate curiosity and intellectual independence, and reward students for walking the path of learning, rather than just producing polished outcomes.

Conclusion

As the academic year begins, the question is twofold: are students still willing to walk the path, and are universities willing to reshape themselves around the kind of learning that makes such a path possible? The Upanisads offer timeless lessons on true knowledge, patient inquiry, and meaningful intellectual growth that are more relevant than ever in the age of AI. By embracing the process of learning and creation, and cultivating the inner heat of tapas, we can transform ourselves and become the kind of students and scholars who are capable of true transformation.

As artificial intelligence reshapes classrooms, ancient Upanisadic narratives offer timeless lessons on true knowledge, patient
