The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of the handloom sector in rural India and the need to adopt innovative strategies to improve the income and livelihood security of artisans.

A Vital Sector for Rural Livelihoods

The handloom sector is a vital component of rural livelihoods, supporting around 35 lakh families nationally and 10,090 weavers in Rajasthan. Women form a significant part of the workforce in this sector, and their contribution is crucial to the survival of many rural families. According to Dr. R. Ravi Babu, Chief General Manager of NABARD Rajasthan, the handloom sector is a significant source of income for rural families and plays a vital role in promoting rural development.

Strengthening Market Linkages and Credit Access

To improve the livelihoods of artisans, Dr. Ravi Babu emphasized the need for technology adoption, design innovation, credit access, market linkages, and institutional convergence. He highlighted various initiatives undertaken by NABARD to support the handloom sector, including the provision of GI certification and authorized-user registration for 23 Rajasthan products. The organization has also supported the establishment of Rural Marts and Rural Haats, which provide a platform for artisans to sell their products directly to consumers.

Empowering Artisans through Skill Development

In addition to market linkages and credit access, NABARD has also launched various skill-development programmes to empower artisans. These programmes aim to enhance the skills of artisans, enabling them to create high-quality products that are in demand in the market. The organization has also supported the establishment of Producer Organisations, which enable artisans to work together to improve their productivity and marketing capabilities.

A Call to Action from a Renowned Artisan

Padma Shri awardee and renowned Bagru artisan Ram Kishore Chhipa was also present at the event. He called upon citizens to wear handloom at least once a week and to support artisans by purchasing their products. Chhipa also emphasized the need to combine diverse Indian traditions to create products with wider market appeal. He believes that by working together, artisans can create unique products that cater to the demands of the market and promote the rich cultural heritage of India.

A Viksit Bharat through Handloom and Handicrafts

The handloom sector has the potential to play a significant role in promoting rural development and empowering artisans. By providing them with access to markets, credit, and skills, we can improve their livelihoods and contribute to the creation of a Viksit Bharat. As Dr. Ravi Babu noted, “Empowering rural artisans is essential for the development of rural India. We need to work together to create a supportive ecosystem that enables artisans to thrive and contribute to the growth of the country.”

In conclusion, the 12th National Handloom Day celebration by NABARD Rajasthan Regional Office was a significant event that highlighted the importance of the handloom sector in rural India. The event emphasized the need to strengthen market linkages, credit access, and institutional convergence to improve the livelihoods of artisans. By working together, we can create a Viksit Bharat through handloom and handicrafts.

NABARD Rajasthan Regional Office celebrated the 12th National
