Reviving the Ujh Project: A Century-Old Dream Takes Shape
In a significant development, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh, has announced that the Ujh Multipurpose Project (MPP) is set to become a reality after being stuck in limbo for over a century. Located on the Ujh River, a major tributary of the Ravi River in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, the project is expected to generate 186-212 MW of electricity.
Unlocking the Potential of the Ujh River
The Ujh Multipurpose Project is designed to provide irrigation to nearly 90,000 hectares of agricultural land in the Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the Pathankot and Gurdaspur districts of Punjab. This will not only boost agricultural productivity but also ensure water availability for industrial use and supply drinking water to the Kathua district. The project’s strategic importance cannot be overstated, as it will also help regulate water flows and plug vulnerable cross-border infiltration routes along the riverbed.
A Legacy of Delay: The Shahpurkandi Project
The Ujh Multipurpose Project is not the only long-pending national project that has been revived under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Minister assured WAPCOS of the government’s full support and cooperation for the successful implementation and timely completion of this prestigious project.

The project will be executed in a phased manner, with construction work beginning simultaneously with the acquisition of the remaining land.
