Rejuvenating the Sacred Path: A New Road for Devotees at ‘South Tirupati’
A Long-Awaited Solution for Devotees
In the heart of Trichy lies the revered Sri Prasanna Venkatachalapathy temple, situated at the base of Perumal Malai. This sacred site is affectionately known as ‘South Tirupati’ or ‘Then Tirupati’, drawing devotees from far and wide, particularly on Pournami (full moon) days. The temple’s popularity is a testament to the enduring faith of its followers, who undertake the arduous yet spiritually enriching pilgrimage known as girivalam.
The Challenges of the Existing Road
The 5-kilometer stretch of the existing girivalam route, which winds its way around the hill temple, has become increasingly treacherous over the years. The road’s deplorable condition poses a significant obstacle for devotees, particularly those who choose to undertake the pilgrimage barefoot. N Saravanan, a resident of Puthunampatti, vividly describes the difficulties faced by devotees: “The road’s condition becomes a major concern on Pournami days when a large number of devotees, including families and children, gather to complete the girivalam.” For many devotees, the pilgrimage around Perumal Malai is a cherished experience, a chance to connect with their faith and the natural world.
A New Road for a Safer and Smoother Pilgrimage
In response to the pressing need for a better road, a detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared to reconstruct the girivalam route. The ₹1.84 crore proposal aims to lay a new tar road along the existing route, providing a safer and smoother walking surface for devotees. The new road will not only alleviate the difficulties faced by devotees but also enhance their overall experience of the pilgrimage. As Saravanan notes, “Many devotees who are unable to travel to other temples far away also undertake the pilgrimage around Perumal Malai.” By improving the road conditions, the temple authorities can ensure that these devotees have a more enjoyable and spiritually enriching experience.

While the proposal has been submitted, administrative approval and financial allocations are still pending. Once these formalities are completed, work on the new road can commence. The temple authorities and local officials are optimistic about the project’s prospects, recognizing the importance of a better road for the devotees.
