Gift of Deceit: How a Facebook Friendship Turned Sour for a Gujarat Farmer
In a shocking case of cyber-fraud, a Jasdan farmer in Gujarat has lost a staggering Rs 6.30 lakh after being duped by a Facebook friend who presented herself as a widow with a child. What’s more astonishing is that this case has led to the uncovering of a wider network of fake gift parcel scams, with police arresting several individuals involved in the racket.
The Web of Deceit
The trail of deceit began with a Facebook friendship between the Jasdan farmer and an African woman, Angel. According to investigators, Angel befriended the farmer on the social media platform and gained his trust by presenting herself as a widow with a child. However, her true intentions were far from benevolent. Angel allegedly told the farmer that a gift parcel had been sent to him and that money was needed to clear it at an airport. The farmer, unaware of the scam, made payments in instalments, ultimately losing around Rs 6.30 lakh.
A Wider Network Exposed
The Rajkot Cyber Crime Police, who are investigating the case, have arrested Majioko Maduabuchi, a former boyfriend of Angel, from Delhi. Maduabuchi was brought to Rajkot on five-day remand, where he was interrogated by police. During the interrogation, Angel allegedly named Maduabuchi as her accomplice, leading to his arrest.
According to police, Maduabuchi and Angel were in a relationship until March. Investigators suspect that Maduabuchi prepared scripts and plans to target victims, while Angel allegedly carried out the conversations with them. The duo allegedly used prepared conversations to build trust, create urgency, and persuade victims to pay money for the release of parcels.
A Scripted Scam
Police have found evidence of the scripted conversations used by the accused to dupe victims. Investigators have also discovered photographs of parcels allegedly used to make the scam appear genuine. These photographs were likely used to create a sense of authenticity and convince victims to part with their money.
