Heavy Rain Lashes Dakshina Kannada and Udupi: Schools Shut Down as Precautionary Measure
Mangaluru, August 4: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are bracing for more heavy rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a 24-hour spell of showers. In response, the district administrations have taken a prudent decision to shut down schools, anganwadi centres, and other educational institutions as a precautionary measure.
Dakshina Kannada Takes Precautions
In Dakshina Kannada, the holiday has been declared with varying schedules for the two subdivisions, based on the prevailing weather conditions. In Mangaluru, Ullal, Moodbidri, Mulki, and Bantwal taluks, all anganwadi centres and government, aided, and private primary and high schools up to Class 10, including residential schools, will remain closed. This decision aims to prevent any potential risks to students and staff.
In Puttur, Belthangady, Kadaba, and Sullia taluks, the holiday has been extended up to the pre-university level. This includes all PU colleges, ITIs, diploma colleges, and residential institutions. The district administration has warned that action will be initiated under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, against institutions violating the order.
Udupi District Takes Caution
In Udupi district, the Deputy Commissioner has declared a holiday on Tuesday for all anganwadi centres and government, aided, and private primary and high schools. The decision was made in view of the IMD’s yellow alert and the continuing rainfall across the district. However, classes will be held as usual for students of pre-university colleges, ITIs, diploma, degree, postgraduate, and engineering colleges.
The district administration has instructed college authorities not to insist on attendance and to ensure that students travel safely to and from campuses. Students who have to cross streams, rivulets, or other vulnerable stretches have been advised to remain at home if travel is considered unsafe.
Safety First
The Dakshina Kannada district administration has advised parents not to allow children to venture near waterlogged areas, rivers, lakes, or the seashore. This warning comes as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential risks to children. The administration has also reiterated its advisory asking fishermen not to venture into the sea.
