Telangana’s Electric Auto Conversion Scheme: A Step Towards a Greener Future
In a significant move towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly transport, the Telangana government has launched a ₹200 crore scheme to convert 18,766 petrol and diesel autorickshaws into electric vehicles (EVs). The scheme, known as the Telangana Auto Rickshaw Electric Conversion Scheme 2026, aims to provide financial assistance to vehicle owners to help them transition to electric autorickshaws.
A Substantial Financial Support
According to Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, the scheme will provide financial assistance of up to ₹1.50 lakh to eligible vehicle owners. This support can be availed through two options: retrofitting their existing autorickshaws or purchasing new electric ones. The government will provide a subsidy of up to ₹1.50 lakh, or the actual cost of the retrofitting, whichever is lower, towards the kit, installation, and standard fitment accessories.
The Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) Region in Focus
The scheme will cover all eligible internal combustion engine autos in the CURE region, which comprises 11,254 diesel and 7,512 petrol autorickshaws. Beneficiaries will have the option to choose whether they want to go for retrofitting or buying new electric autos. For those who opt for retrofitting, the government will provide a subsidy of up to ₹1.50 lakh towards the installation of an AIS-123-approved electric kit by empanelled vendors.
A Three-Pronged Implementation Mechanism
The government has proposed a three-level mechanism for implementation and monitoring of the scheme. This includes a State-Level Steering Committee, Scheme Implementation Committee, and District Sanction Committee. This mechanism will ensure that the scheme is implemented efficiently and effectively.
Funding the Scheme
The government plans to fund the scheme by drawing ₹50 crore each from the SC, ST, BC, and Minority Welfare Departments. This assistance will be available to eligible vehicle owners irrespective of their social category.
A Net-Zero Carbon Emissions Goal
The Transport Minister stated that the scheme is intended to support the transition of Hyderabad’s urban transport system towards net-zero carbon emissions while reducing the financial burden of rising fuel costs on auto-rickshaw drivers. By promoting the use of electric autorickshaws, the government aims to balance environmental protection, sustainable urban development, and the economic interests of auto-rickshaw drivers.
