Indian Railways approves Rs 299-crore Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard upgrade

Indian Railways Embarks on a Major Revamp of Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard

In a significant move to boost train operations and enhance passenger handling capacity, the Indian Railways has approved a Rs 299-crore project to comprehensively remodel the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard under the South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone. The ambitious project aims to address the existing operational constraints and delays at the busy Visakhapatnam Railway Station, one of the busiest terminals in the region.

A Hub of Activity: Visakhapatnam Railway Station

Visakhapatnam Railway Station handles a staggering 80,000 passengers and an average of 113 trains every day, making it a hub of activity in the region. However, the existing yard layout poses a significant challenge, with terminating and through trains having to pass through multiple surface crossings, leading to delays at approach signals and operational constraints. The approved project seeks to reorganise the coaching yard and improve operational efficiency, ensuring smoother train operations and enhanced passenger experience.

A Comprehensive Makeover

The Rs 299-crore project includes a range of works aimed at transforming the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard. Existing loop lines will be dismantled, and point zones will be reconfigured to improve the yard’s operational efficiency. The six existing platforms will be widened, and six new platforms will be constructed, equipped with modern passenger amenities. To enhance the station’s capacity, six additional railway lines will be laid, ensuring that the station can handle increasing passenger traffic and accommodate more train services in the coming years.

Improving Accessibility and Safety

The project also focuses on improving accessibility and safety at the station. Lifts, ramps, and escalators will be installed on the widened platforms, ensuring that passengers with disabilities can easily access the platforms. An entrance will be developed on the eastern side of the station, along with the relocation of the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). Surface parking facilities, an improved circulating area, and an Electronic Interlocking (EI) system will also be developed, further enhancing the station’s infrastructure.

Expected Benefits

Railway officials are optimistic about the expected benefits of the project. They believe that the remodelling of the coaching yard will reduce congestion, improve platform utilisation, and minimise train detention, ultimately enhancing punctuality. The additional infrastructure is also expected to help the station handle increasing passenger traffic and accommodate more train services in the coming years, making it a more efficient and passenger-friendly terminal.

A Major Boost for Rail Travel

The approval of the Rs 299-crore project is a significant development for Indian Railways, marking a major step towards improving the country’s rail infrastructure. The remodelling of the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard is expected to have a positive impact on rail travel in the region, enhancing the overall passenger experience and ensuring smoother train operations. As the project progresses, it will be interesting to see the tangible benefits it brings to the passengers and the rail network.
