KGMU Takes a Giant Leap in Cardiology Services
A New Era in Heart Care
In a significant development for the medical fraternity in Lucknow, the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is set to expand its cardiology services with the addition of 56 new beds in its state-of-the-art 10-storey cardiology block. The new block, which has been under construction for several years, is now ready to cater to the growing needs of patients seeking cardiac care. The expansion will take the department’s total bed strength from 84 to 130, signaling a major boost to the university’s cardiac care facilities.
A Long-Awaited Expansion
The Rs 37-crore project was initially scheduled for completion in 2021, but a series of delays and additional expenditures pushed back the timeline. The fire exit ramp, a crucial requirement for obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the fire department, was not part of the original design. However, after discovering the oversight, the university made the necessary changes, securing the NOC and paving the way for the launch of services in the new facility.
Services to Commence Soon
Head of the cardiology department, Prof Rishi Sethi, confirmed that the building is ready, with three floors already in use for OPD and other services. “The remaining services will be started soon,” he said, hinting at the imminent launch of the new facility. Prof Sethi also revealed that the university is conducting interviews to recruit nurses, paramedical personnel, and other staff on a contractual basis to support the expansion. Permanent staff will be added later to ensure seamless operations.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The new cardiology block boasts cutting-edge facilities, including cath labs, monitoring nursing stations, echocardiography machines, temporary pacemakers, multi-channel ECG machines, and treadmill test (TMT) machines. These advanced facilities will enable the university to provide top-notch care to patients, reducing wait times and improving outcomes.
Relief for Patients
A senior KGMU official pointed out that the expansion will provide much-needed relief to patients who often have to wait for beds, especially in intensive care units. The new block will cater to the growing demand for cardiac care, ensuring that patients receive timely and quality treatment.
Timeline and Milestones
While the project was initially scheduled for completion in 2021, the delays have pushed back the timeline. However, with the fire exit ramp now operational, the university is preparing to start services in the new facility. The 32 general beds are expected to become operational within two weeks, with the remaining 24 private beds launched later under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
