Metro March: Residents Demand JBS-Medchal Corridor Implementation
In a show of determination, residents and activists from Medchal marched from Jeedimetla to the Jubilee Bus Station Metro Hub on Sunday, urging the Centre and the Telangana government to expedite the implementation of the JBS-Medchal Metro corridor. The march was organised by the Medchal Metro Sadhana Samithi (MMSS) and supported by The Citizens Council, highlighting the urgent need to expand Hyderabad’s Metro Rail network in view of rapid urbanisation and growing traffic congestion.
A Call to Action
Addressing the participants, MMSS founder Sampath Reddy Mamidi made it clear that the movement would continue until work on the Medchal Metro corridor begins. “Our walk will continue until the first pillar of the Medchal Metro is erected,” he said, emphasizing the importance of this project for the residents of North Hyderabad. The organisers believe that the JBS-Medchal corridor, along with the Raidurgam-Shamshabad International Airport Metro corridor, are among the most critical projects to meet Hyderabad’s mobility needs.
A Critical Need
Both corridors could serve lakhs of commuters, ease congestion, improve connectivity, and support future growth. However, the organisers expressed concern that while the Raidurgam-Shamshabad Airport Metro corridor has reportedly been shelved by the Telangana government, the JBS-Medchal Metro project is still awaiting approval from the Government of India despite state recommendations. The delay has deprived commuters in North Hyderabad of a safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable transport system.
Hyderabad’s Metro Rail Dilemma
The Citizens Council pointed out that Hyderabad, despite being one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan cities and a major contributor to the national economy, has not received the Metro Rail expansion it deserves compared to several other cities. The council highlighted that the city’s growing population and increasing traffic congestion require a robust public transport system, which the Metro Rail expansion can provide.
A Long Overdue Project
The walk began at the Gandhi Statue in Jeedimetla and concluded at the JBS Metro Hub, with participants carrying placards and raising slogans in support of the long-pending project. The march was a testament to the residents’ determination to see the JBS-Medchal Metro corridor become a reality. As Sampath Reddy Mamidi said, “We will continue to fight for this project until it is implemented.”
