Supreme Court Hopes for Amicable Resolution in Sunjay Kapur Estate Row
In a significant development in the long-standing inheritance dispute between late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, and his wife, Priya Kapur, the Supreme Court on Thursday expressed optimism about an amicable settlement. The court took note of a preliminary report submitted by the mediator, former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who was appointed to facilitate a settlement in the dispute.
Mediation Proceedings Underway
The Supreme Court Bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran noted that the mediation proceedings had been conducted over six sessions, with the mediator interacting with all members of the family. The court was pleased to observe that the mediation was proceeding satisfactorily, with the parties cooperating. The mediator had sought time until November 2 to continue the mediation proceedings, which the court allowed.

The Supreme Court urged the parties to make an effort to resolve the dispute amicably, warning them against getting dragged into long-drawn litigation. The Bench said, “Let the mediation proceed. We shall wait for one more report.”
Background of the Dispute
The dispute stems from the creation of the Rani Kapur Family Trust in 2017, which holds shares in Sona Comstar, an automotive component manufacturer. The trust was created through a trust deed executed on October 26, 2017. Rani Kapur, the late businessman’s mother, has questioned the creation and operation of the trust, alleging that it effectively divested her of control over substantial assets without her informed consent.
Rani Kapur’s Plea
Rani Kapur’s plea, filed in the Supreme Court, seeks protection of the family estate. She has alleged that her late son and others orchestrated the transfer of key family assets into the trust without her knowledge or approval. The plea claims that she was asked to sign documents on the pretext of routine administrative formalities. Rani Kapur has also sought directions to maintain the status quo over the estate and restrain the alienation of assets during the pendency of the dispute.
Sunjay Kapur’s Family Background
Sunjay Kapur, the chairperson of Sona Comstar, died of a cardiac arrest while playing polo in London last year. He was first married to designer Nandita Mahtani and later to actor Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had two children — Samaira and Kiaan. Following their divorce in 2016, he married Priya Sachdev Kapur in 2017, and the couple later had a son, Azarias.
