Flood-Hit Villagers in Assam Get a Grooming Break
In the aftermath of the devastating floods that ravaged Assam, a unique initiative has brought relief to thousands of villagers. In Chumoni village, located in the Charaideo district, a team of 18 beauticians and 24 barbers from Moran has been offering free grooming services to over 2,000 men and women. This unusual initiative was organized by BJP MLA Suruj Dehingia, who aimed to bring a sense of freshness and normalcy to the lives of the flood-hit residents.
A Grooming Break Amidst the Chaos
The village of Chumoni is still reeling from the effects of the floods, with thick layers of mud and silt making it difficult for residents to access the outside world. Normally, villagers would travel around five kilometers to Nazira or Simaluguri for personal grooming, but the ongoing disruption has made it impossible for them to do so. Dehingia’s initiative has come as a welcome respite for the villagers, who were struggling to cope with the aftermath of the floods.
A Personal Touch
Dehingia, a 50-year-old legislator, was moved by the plight of the villagers during his visits to the flood-hit areas. He realized that while food, medicines, clothes, and other assistance had reached the affected people, they needed something more to help them cope mentally. “Food, medicines, clothes, and other assistance have reached the flood-hit people provided by the government, social groups, and individuals. But, they needed to prepare themselves mentally, and that would be by some freshness,” he said.
A Team Effort
The team of 42 professionals from Moran volunteered their services to help the flood-hit villagers. None of them charged the villagers for their work, using their skills and hands to offer a sense of solidarity. Transportation for the volunteers and packed lunches were arranged free of cost, adding to the generosity of the initiative.

For the residents of Chumoni, the grooming drive has brought more than just haircuts and beauty care – it has brought a sense of normalcy and freshness to their lives. The initiative has also helped Dehingia identify another need among the flood-affected population. “Next Sunday, I am planning to take physiotherapists there. That is an important need I have noticed,” he said.
