Vandalism at the Heart of the City: Lucknow School Van Attacked by Bike-borne Miscreants
A Harrowing Morning for Schoolchildren
In a shocking incident that sent shockwaves through the city, a group of motorcycle-borne youths attacked a school van carrying children in Lucknow on Monday morning. The van, which was transporting students from a private school in Lalbagh, was vandalised and its driver threatened before the attackers fled the scene. Fortunately, all the children inside the van escaped unhurt.
The Incident Unfolds
The incident occurred around 7:15 am near Charak Diagnostic Centre at Charak Chauraha, under the Chowk police station limits. According to the FIR lodged by the van driver, Mohd Aamir (26), the group of youths, riding recklessly and creating a nuisance on the road, intercepted the school van and began attacking it. The assailants allegedly damaged the vehicle while several schoolchildren were inside.
A Scene of Panic and Terror
The sudden attack left the children terrified, with many crying and screaming in fear. Hearing the commotion, residents rushed to the spot, forcing the attackers to flee. Before fleeing, the accused allegedly threatened to kill the driver, the FIR states. The eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the attackers not only vandalising the van but also abusing the driver and the children.
Eyewitness Accounts and Allegations
Mohit Kashyap, an eyewitness, said that the attackers not only attacked but also abused and fled from the spot. The guardians of the children further alleged that the incident happened in front of the UP 112 vehicle and a police outpost, but the police kept mum. Zareen Khan, the parent of one child, told media persons that this happened in front of the cops, and they kept watching it.
Investigation Underway
Based on a complaint lodged by the van driver, police registered an FIR under Sections 131 (assault or use of criminal force), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 324(4) (mischief causing damage) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. An investigation is underway, with the police using the motorcycle registration number to identify the accused. DCP, West Zone, Kamlesh Dixit, said that police have begun analysing CCTV footage from the area and are probing the motive behind the attack and whether the van was specifically targeted.
A Concerning Incident
The incident raises serious concerns about the safety and security of schoolchildren in the city. The fact that the attackers were able to flee the scene without being apprehended by the police has raised questions about the effectiveness of the law enforcement system. The police have assured that no injuries were reported and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the investigation. However, the incident has left many parents and guardians worried about the safety of their children.
A Call for Action
The incident highlights the need for increased security measures to be put in place to ensure the safety of schoolchildren in the city. The police and the authorities must take immediate action to identify and apprehend the attackers and bring them to justice. The parents and guardians of the children must also be involved in the investigation and must be kept informed about the progress of the case. Only then can we ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.
