Market Turmoil: Top 10 Most Valued Firms Witness Rs 1 Lakh Crore Wealth Erosion

The Indian stock market has been witnessing a volatile trend in recent times, with the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty experiencing a decline of 0.62% and 0.83% respectively last week. This downturn has had a significant impact on the market capitalisation of India’s top 10 most-valued firms, with five of them losing over Rs 1 lakh crore in market value.

The Losers

At the forefront of this market erosion is IT major TCS, which witnessed a decline of Rs 34,263.28 crore in its market capitalisation, taking its total valuation to Rs 8,53,506.85 crore. This steep fall is a cause for concern, especially given the company’s reputation as a leader in the IT sector.

Reliance Industries, another stalwart of the Indian corporate world, also saw its valuation decline by Rs 31,869.13 crore to Rs 17,70,056.06 crore. State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender, suffered a market valuation drop of Rs 25,891.88 crore to Rs 9,85,829.96 crore. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank also experienced significant declines in their market capitalisation, slipping by Rs 7,165.37 crore and Rs 2,792.65 crore respectively.

The Gainers

However, amidst this market turmoil, there were some silver linings. LIC, the country’s largest insurer, saw its market valuation surge by Rs 26,438.49 crore to Rs 5,23,330.31 crore. Bharti Airtel, the country’s largest telecom operator, also witnessed a significant increase in its market capitalisation, rising by Rs 20,592.13 crore to Rs 12,43,016.11 crore. Bajaj Finance, a leading non-banking financial company, added Rs 3,548.79 crore to its valuation, taking it to Rs 6,77,197.34 crore. Larsen & Toubro and Hindustan Unilever also experienced notable gains in their market capitalisation.

The Market Outlook

According to Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, the market ended the week lower due to elevated crude oil prices, renewed geopolitical uncertainty, and mixed global cues, which weighed on investor sentiment. As the market continues to grapple with these challenges, it remains to be seen how the top 10 most-valued firms will perform in the coming weeks.

The Top 10 Most Valued Firms

The current ranking of India’s top 10 most-valued firms remains unchanged, with Reliance Industries holding the top spot, followed by Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, TCS, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, LIC, and Hindustan Unilever. However, the recent market downturn has highlighted the need for these companies to be more vigilant and proactive in their strategy to mitigate the risks and capitalize on the opportunities presented by the market.
